South McPhaul Ranch offers its owners an opportunity to hunt trophy elk and mule deer with 350 to 400 class bulls and 170 to 200 class bucks taken on the ranch and in the area. Fishing is not far away at Quemado Lake and nearby Springerville, and Showlow, Arizona. South McPhaul Ranch is located in the traditional ranching county of Catron in southwestern New Mexico and just north of Highway 60, the famed �coast to coast highway�, running from I-25 all the way into Phoenix, Arizona. The closest cities of size, and their approximate distances from the ranch are Albuquerque (2 � hours), Grants, (1 hour), and Springerville (1 � hours).
Breathtaking panoramic views of the Sawtooth Mountains to the east and the Cibola National Forest to the south can be taken in throughout many parts of the property. The ranch itself and the surrounding area are rich in the cultures of the southwest. Histories remains are visible in many ways whether it be an old log homestead, a rock Indian ruin, an ancient petroglyph, or scattered shards of pottery and arrowheads.
Hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation are a large part of the ranch and the area. South McPhaul Ranch has been receiving approximately nine antlerless (cow) elk permits, five either sex (archery) elk permits and, nine mature bull (muzzleloader) elk permits. Permits are renewed and issued annually through the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. Mule deer hunting is open to archery, muzzleloaders, and rifles, with unlimited permits available to the ranch. Quemado Lake, which is only around 45 minutes from Pie Town, has trout, catfish, and small mouth bass fishing, plus the areas around Springerville, and Showlow, have numerous lakes with rainbow, cutthroat, and brown trout. With the White Mountains of Arizona only a couple of hours away, winter snow skiing is available at Sunrise Ski Park just outside of Springerville.
South McPhaul Ranch is at an elevation of around 7,000 to 7,500 feet. The climate is seasonal with mild summer and winter temperatures. As is typical of the area an average of 10 to 12 head of cattle per section, or 160 head, would be the ranches carrying capacity. The native grama, western wheat, rice grass, and chamisa provide good feed for both cattle and wildlife.
